As previously reported here, kimothpy posted a note on the devnet forums revealing some renderings of this supposed new Sl-6000 model... those renderings might as well have been pictures, because they are right on the mark!
This new model, the Zaurus SL-6000, is rumored to be released in the US sometime in early January.
The unit is rumored to have the following features:
-
Integrated wifi!
-
Integrated bluetooth
- A larger 4 inch transreflective VGA (640x480) CG Silicon screen.
- Along with the larger screen comes a larger Zaurus overall. It's rumored to be much larger than the 5x00 models.
- It may sport a 1500mAH battery, while it's better than the 5x00 battery, with integrated wifi and bluetooth, you'll probably need a spare.
- It still comes with the defacto SD and CF slots
-
USB host
- It's also rumored to have a sled, which will of course greatly increase it's size, but also provide an additional CF slot and battery extender!.
-
Built-in speaker and mic, which not only allows for quick voice recording, but with their inteligent placement of the speaker and mic and the the right software, this Zaurus can be used as a VOIP phone!
-
Rotation on the fly, when you press and hold the 'light' button, the screen will rotate to landscape
- A more rugged design
- It's rumored to have 64mb ROM (like the 7x0 series), and either 64 or 128 mb RAM.
I think it's clear now that Sharp is focusing all efforts on the enteprise market. While I think it's great they may have added more memory, upgraded the screen to the (what should be standard) CG Silicon screen, but I don't think the average user would require a ruggadized handheld. Then again, I remember someone on the DevNet boards posting a horror story of their Zaurus dropping to the ground (a few feet) while on a ladder in a server room. OK, maybe for some, ruggadized is good.
Lastly, I still feel great about spending my hard earned(?) money on my 760. I really, really like the clamshell design.
And now for some pictures, try not to be too critical of these...

Unless you've got really big hands, it doesn't look much bigger than a SL5500. It would be useful to see some photos of the new device next to a 5500.
I couldn't quite see what all the front panel hardware buttons were for. Is there finally a dedicated On/Off button?
Also, I wonder if they have finally got SDIO in this too... They seem to have everything else. What they should really do, I think, is offer this new device as it is and also a clamshell design with the exact same specs. Then both camps would be happy. But I guess with it being targetted at the enterprise market, moving parts are a no-no. The front panel slider has been proven, while there have been horror stories of people twisting the C7x0 screen too far.

You didn't show any pics of the side of the unit...on the rendering, there were some buttons flanking the IR port, are they there in this unit? |

undrwater - sorry I only had a couple minutes with it... then he had to run. I will try to get more pictures next time I see it (tomorrow).
Also, I just spoke to another Sharp rep and am now able to confirm the new Zaurus will also have integrated bluetooth! That's wifi and bluetooth...!
Note: I've updated the article as well. |

Could you tell whether it spots a VGA screen or the lower 320x240 (like the rest of 5x000 series)?

Thanks for the new pictures!
It doesn't actually look all that big. The C7x0 series is significantly shorter than all the SL-5x00 models because the keyboard isn't unerneath the screen.
It also looks thinner than the C760 as the SL-5500 is and also looks narrower than the C760 by about the same amount as the 5500. |

Very nice, but i still think i will opt for a c760. I am just loving the clamshell design. The new one is really nice though, but i just don't want another sl-5x00 form factor one. But who know, i might end up getting one way later. |

Looks nice, and I can always appreciate some ruggedization.
Did you see if it had the standard connector port on the bottom? Is that what is in the center of picture 72.jpg? |

Yes, that is the standard serial port. There is also another port that is hidden by a cover (shown just under the serial port in pic 72). It seemed to be a larger port, and I'm not certain (neither were the people I spoke with) how it would be used... |

I see now where the standard serial will be. Right on.
And that larger port? I'm willing to bet that's for the sled. |

The VGA screen and USB host are definate selling points. The battery is a bit disappointing, though, especially with integrated WiFi and Bluetooth. Is the keyboard less flimsy-feeling than the 5500? If it does include SDIO, combining CF and SDIO accessories could pose a problem with that layout (from the way it looks). Otherwise, Sharp looks like they're making good progress toward a great ultra-portable computer. Give me the screen, USB, and WiFi in a clamshell, and I'd fork out the cash today. |

- This looks about half an inch wider than the SL-5500, similarly longer. Not great, but given the other features I could live with that size, I think. Might have to get a bigger butt bag. (snicker) I don't suppose you brought a ruler on the second trip? (wolfish grin) I'll search for the C760 dims; should be able to estimate from there.
- I'm a bit surprised at how few icons are on that display, though. If it's actually true VGA, it's over four times the pixels that the SL-5500 has, so at least four times the info should be on there. Are you sure it's really 640x480?
- Otherwise it's got a very impressive feature list. It seems to correct just about every gripe I have with my SL-5500, and it will correct them all once I know for certain the freaking on/off switch is all better.
- Awesome review ... thanks!!! |

Just because it has better resolution (640x480), that doesn't necessarily mean that you'll see 4 times the info on the screen.... the nice thing about my 760 (same 640x480 res), is that I can have small icons (tiny but clear), or the larger icons (easier on the eyes). With scalable fonts, you can easily reduce/enlarge the font size to whatever your pleasure... and with the resolution so high, it's extremely sharp! |

I just wrote to Steve Petix of Sharp USA asking him about wi-fi, bluetooth and LCD screen info. Of course this was prior to reading these forum notes. I didn't specifically ask him when the release date was but I did imply that I was looking for Zaurus updates. What are the chances he's going to offer any timing insights? And has anyone heard of the pricing.
